The Life and Times of AdMob

Between May 4 and May 18, AdMob is giving our publishers an extra incentive to advertise their site on other sites in our network of more than 7,000 mobile Web sites. Publishers can take advantage of this Traffic Accelerator Promotion and transfer funds they have earned from AdMob to run ads and get a 35 percent bonus on any amount they transfer above $50. For example, if a publisher transfers $100 to run ads AdMob will kick in an additional $35.  Give it a try. It’s easy for publishers to transfer funds to get started and create ads that link to their site.

Over the past few months, AdMob has received more questions than usual on why particular accounts are disabled and how we determine which ones should no longer be eligible to use our services. While we respond to all inquires directly, we thought it would be helpful to give insight into how we handle these sensitive issues.

We take great pride in instilling confidence in our users that we run a high quality network. We take any questionable activity very seriously and constantly work to improve the quality of both our advertiser and publisher networks. We have multiple monitoring systems in place to detect the different types of questionable activities that could occur. These activities include, but are not limited to: repeated manual clicks or impressions, robots, automated click and impression generating tools, third-party services that generate clicks or impressions such as pay-to-click, pay-to-surf, autosurf, and click-exchange programs, poor ad code implementation, caching AdMob ads, and repeated violations of our content guidelines.

All cases of questionable activity are thoroughly investigated by our team before we take action, and we are able to see fraudulent activity very easily. AdMob will take action to disable an account in a clear case of activity that violates the company’s Terms of Service or Content Guidelines. We never disable an account for financial gain.

Publishers should adhere to AdMob’s Terms of Service and follow our Content Guidelines. Only publishers who are in violation of AdMob’s Terms of Service or Content Guidelines should be concerned. Even if a user happens to click more than one ad on your site, actual user behavior is easily distinguished from true fraud.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Happy Birthday AdMob!

April 28th, 2009

A lot has changed for AdMob since were incorporated in April 2006: we’ve grown from just Omar to more than 100 employees, from a little space a Sequoia Capital’s office to seven offices worldwide, and while we’ve grown mobile Internet usage has grown too. Today there are more than 49 million mobile Web users in the alone US each month.

Some things have stayed the same. We began by serving performance advertising for a variety of clients, which gave us an early and clear focus on delivering measurable results. We entered the brand advertising business about a year in when we served our first banner ad, which happened to be for a movie. But we’ve kept the same focus on delivering measurable results. Today we have a healthy mix of brand and performance ads running across our powerful technology platform.

Here is a snapshot of some of our major milestones and the scale we’ve achieved:
•    75 billion ads served
•    1st company to offer a self-service mobile advertising network
•    100 million unique mobile users reached worldwide each month
•    1st to create unique iPhone and rich media ad units for mobile
•    12.7 million iPhones and iPod touch devices reached in March 2009, appx. 1 in 3 of the devices worldwide
•    Set the standard for the construction of ad units
•    7,000 mobile Web sites live on our network
•    1,418 iPhone apps sent us an ad request in March, including 33 of the top 100 free applications
•    186th Android application served its first AdMob ad
•    Drove 230,000 downloads of iPhone applications through our Download Exchange in less than a month
•    160 countries and territories that we sell and serve ads in

We owe a lot of our success to the great publishers, developers, and advertisers we’ve partnered with over the past three years. Without them we would not be the leading mobile advertising platform. So we want to take minute to thank them for being partners in our success! We’ll be posting happy birthday wishes from just a few of these folks over the next couple of days.
