Today we’re launching the AdMob SDK for Android for app developers to display AdMob ads in their applications! Why are we excited about this?
First, Android is one of the most forward-leading platforms in mobile today, and it represents a great opportunity for advertisers to reach a new mobile audience. We’ve seen with the launch of our iPhone network that these new platforms allow advertisers to achieve their campaign goals with significantly lower friction and cost compared to traditional online ad spend, and we’re hoping that Android provides the same value for both brand and performance advertisers.
Second, app developers need a business model and we’re excited offer it with ad monetization for Android apps. Ad-supported content (when delivered in a relevant and unobtrusive manner) is good for users, advertisers, and app developers. At some point in the next few quarters, Google will enable payment services for Android, but for now, app developers have no way to profit from building Android applications. Even once paid apps are available, we believe many free apps will still choose to monetize with ads – just like we’ve seen with iPhone apps.
Third, 2009 should be an exciting year for Android, with a number of manufacturers and carriers announcing Android devices in the US and around the world. AdMob is committed to making it easier and better for users to interact with high-quality mobile content, and Android’s open platform will continue to drive innovation across the mobile ecosystem.
We’ve seen some good media coverage of our news today, take a read if you have a few minutes. If you have ideas or feedback about the AdMob SDK for Android, let us know.
